If Google can't find you optimizing for AI Search is the wrong problem to solve
You Can't Win the AI Race If Google Can't Even Find You
Here's the uncomfortable truth nobody's talking about in the AI search optimization space:
Most websites obsessing over AI visibility are invisible to everyone.
I built an AI search analysis tool. It scans websites and tells you how ready you are for ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity to cite you. Cool, right?
Then I started noticing a pattern that made me question everything.
The 67% Problem
Sites kept scoring around 67%. Good structured data. Decent content clarity. Reasonable authority signals. Yet something felt off.
When I dug deeper, I found the real issue: these sites had no SEO foundation whatsoever.
Missing meta descriptions. No internal linking strategy. Broken heading hierarchies. URLs that looked like they were generated by a drunk robot.
And I realized I was doing these users a disservice.
The Uncomfortable Math
Let me show you why AI-only optimization is a waste of time for most sites:
- AI search traffic (2024): ~2-5% of total search volume
- Traditional Google traffic: ~95% of search volume
- Sites with basic SEO issues: ~70% of SMB websites
So we're optimizing 70% of websites for 5% of traffic while they're hemorrhaging the other 95%.
That's not optimization. That's rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
What I Built Instead
Today I shipped something different. AImpactScanner now runs two audits in one scan:
AI Readiness Check (18 factors)
- Structured data AI engines can parse
- Content clarity for LLM comprehension
- Authority signals AI uses for citations
SEO Foundation Audit (9 factors)
- Meta tags, titles, descriptions
- Internal linking structure
- Mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, URL structure
27 factors. 15 seconds. One scan.
Why This Changes Everything
Here's what happens when you run both audits together:
Scenario 1: High AI score, Low SEO score "Your site is AI-ready, but Google can't find you. Fix your foundation first, then worry about AI citations."
Scenario 2: Low AI score, High SEO score "Your SEO is solid. Here's exactly what to add for AI visibility - you're 80% there."
Scenario 3: Low AI score, Low SEO score "Let's be honest - you need basics first. Here's your priority order."
Without both scores, you're flying blind.
The Doug Hall Test
I ran my landing page through Doug Hall's "Overt Benefit + Dramatic Difference" framework (the guy who invented half the products at P&G):
Old headline: "Is AI Stealing Your Traffic?" Problem: Only speaks to AI. Ignores the 95%.
New headline: "Is AI Stealing Your Traffic? Or Is Your Website Invisible to Everyone?" Why it works: Speaks to everyone. The AI-worried crowd AND the "my site gets no traffic" crowd.
Old value prop: "148 AI Factors analyzed" Problem: Meaningless number. What even is a factor?
New value prop: "One scan. Two critical audits. 27 factors across AI readiness AND SEO foundation." Why it works: Clear benefit. Dramatic difference. Nobody else does both.
The Transformative Insight
Most AI optimization tools are selling snake oil to broken websites.
"Optimize for AI!" they say, while your site has:
- No meta description (so Google shows random text)
- No internal links (so crawlers can't discover pages)
- HTTP instead of HTTPS (so browsers show scary warnings)
You could have perfect AI optimization and still get zero AI citations. Why? Because AI engines crawl the same way Google does. If Google can't find you, neither can they.
The foundation has to exist before the optimization matters.
That's why I added SEO to an AI tool. Not because SEO is sexy. Because without it, AI optimization is pointless.
What's Next
The landing page is live. The 27-factor scan is deployed. Now I wait and watch:
- Do conversion rates improve with the dual value prop?
- Do users understand "AI + SEO" better than "AI factors"?
- Does the longer headline hurt mobile UX?
I'll report back with real numbers.
The Takeaway
If you're building in the AI space, ask yourself: Am I solving the whole problem, or just the exciting part?
AI search is the future. But the future is built on foundations.
